The California Budget Challenge is an online simulation activity that allows users to try their hand at balancing the state budget. The site features real world policy options that are currently being debated by the California legislature.
Users can send their budgets to their local representatives and compare their choices with others. Developed for Next Ten, the program includes a custom content management system that allows Next Ten staff to update the content and preview their changes dynamically. The site is supported by a robust database that continually updates the feedback based on user input. This project also demonstrates our ability to create complex sites that can be “modularized” for use by other groups. The core program has been adapted by the states of New Jersey and Oregon and the County of Los Angeles to produce budget challenges specific to those geographic areas.
